Character Name: Oshima Yuko the 9th (Also known formerly as Kimishima Hikari, and also goes by the nickname “Yuuko”)
Canon: AKB0048
Character Background:
Born Kimishima Hikari, little is known about her background other than her time spent with AKB0048 —presumably, like every other girl in the group, she auditioned and was chosen based both on her performance and her personal spirit. She then became an understudy of the 72nd generation, working to learn both the songs and the generous, caring spirit of AKB0048, but also a lot of practical skills: how to shoot guns, use micsabers (lightsabers + microphones), and exist in zero-G, to name a few. At Hikari’s first general elections, she was not selected as one of the top ten members of AKB, a fact which both saddened and determined her — for she wished to compete for the center position, the girl who leads the rest of the group. Hikari declares the current center (and Center Nova, or most radiant member) Acchan the 13th to be her rival, and the other girl agrees, knowing that words of consolation are not what Hikari needs to feel better after suffering a defeat to one of her rivals.

Within the year, Hikari succeeds the spirit of one of the original members of AKB and becomes Oshima Yuko the 9th. Now on stage with her rival and hero, Yuko quickly becomes popular, striving to join Acchan in her radiance in front of the fans. Unfortunately, before she can do so, Acchan disappears in a flash of light at the concert on Lancastar, never to be seen again. Yuko continues to rise in popularity, but she never quite manages to forget about Acchan, and wonders about her frequently.

When the understudies of the 77th generation arrive, Yuko sees them both as girls to guide, but also as rivals — because they shine so brightly that they remind her of Acchan. She also struggles with helping her friend Takamina to accept that it’s alright to be greedy when thinking of your own dream, after Takamina learns that she no longer resonates purely with her name predecessor. Yuuko teaches her that she’s allowed to take care of herself and think of herself when it comes to personal happiness. She encourages Takamina to go on with concerts even after she almost kills herself through indecision, and together the two of them resume their places at the top of the popularity charts after their concert on Tundrastar and subsequent guard duty at the second concert on Lancastar.

The second season of AKB sees Yuuko taking everything about the 77th Generation, in particular Chieri and Nagisa, the two most radiant, much more seriously. After the general manager announces the reinstatement of the General Elections and the Center Nova position, Yuuko publicly declares her decision to call all of her friends “rivals” until she becomes the Center Nova — she becomes slightly more reckless, throwing herself into danger to save Chieri and two other girls from a publicly broadcast trial as a challenge. Yuuko works tirelessly in photoshoots and advertisements to take first place in the General Election, narrowly beating out her best friend, Takamina. She then declares that she’ll continue to work until her final dream comes true: she will become the next Center Nova, and finally surpass Acchan.

When the anti-entertainment forces that plague the multiverse finally decide to make a direct attack on AKB’s home planet, Akibastar, Yuuko decides that this is her moment to shine. She shines so brightly during their counterattack that she not only disarms several enemy units, but with a blast of light, she also disappears. When she awakens, she finds herself on the stairs to succession — a magical place outside of time and space which every AKB girl walks to her dreams. Unfortunately, Yuuko’s dream has ended here: because the conditions for the disappearance of the Center Nova require three elements (a willing, radiant spirit, the presence of the mineral Dualium, and a concert setting) and she only had two of those, she can never truly become a Center Nova…at least, not yet. As she cries, the original Acchan appears to her and explains that this place is the stairs to the stage of dreams, where Center Novas perform constantly, endlessly, in order to keep entertainment and harmony in people’s souls. Although Yuuko has the radiance necessary to become Center Nova, she is not yet ready to achieve it. So despite admitting that the whole time, she wanted to sing alongside of her heroine and idol, Acchan sends her back to the real world, just in time to help Nagisa (now Acchan the 14th) and Chieri (now the actual Center Nova) save Akibastar from the full-frontal invasion. Together with the rest of the girls, she restores Akibastar back to its original happiness, and strikes a decisive blow to the anti-entertainment forces.

Character personality:
Yuuko is a girl that exudes optimism and spunk. As a child, she dreamed of nothing more than joining the (somewhat forbidden) idol group of AKB0048, and like all the girls in the group, left home at a young age to join them. She's always been a person for whom dreams are not fantasy but instead, far-off goals meant to be reached -- Yuuko aims high, reaches that height, and then sets herself up for even higher ideas. Combined with an unfaltering sense of determination, this makes her a dynamic personality who isn't easily swayed by the fears or demands of others. In the show she makes it extremely clear that she's going straight to the top of the group -- becoming the center nova, or the lead girl in the idol group AKB0048. People respect her for her sense of self, and her determination and drive are very commendable; she knows who she is and where she wants to go, and doesn't doubt her ability to get there for a second. Of course, she’s also silly at times: with her friends, she enjoys teasing them with lewd jokes and punchlines, frequently remarking that something is “sexy” and making silly, sexy poses in front of the mirror. She has a high self-esteem, and she doesn’t mind showing it off. In fact, she often encourages the rest of the group to shine brightly and be confident as well, telling them they need to be radiant in their own ways.
Through AKB0048 and their multiple performances over the course of the series, we also see that Yuuko is extremely passionate about music and her friendships she's cultured through her time with the idol group. Music has always been the thing that inspires not only Yuuko, but all of her friends, to succeed. As a member of AKB0048, Yuuko is intimately connected to the ability that music has to influence crowds and protect people. She firmly believes that music, and AKB0048, has the power to change the world. This is the reason she places so much of her faith in what she does -- a solo can change a person inside and out, and inspire generations of new singers and idols in turn. This sort of importance in music makes her a fierce friend to all of her fellow successors and even the understudies. When her friends think they can't continue on or don't believe they're strong enough, she's always there to tell them they can do it, and carry them to the end if she must. She protects her friends with her music and with her micsabers and flying robots. Her relationship with Takamina, one of her best friends, is especially important -- she is there for her through Takamina's entire struggle over whether or not to graduate from AKB0048, and tells her fiercely that it's important to think about yourself on occasion. She is always willing to protect her friends and what she believes in -- she learns to pilot flying robots and use lightsabers and kung fu because she can't imagine a world without music in it. She will protect everything she loves until her last breath. And she legitimately enjoys looking at the world: she takes up photography because she enjoys capturing people's timeless moments, when they think no one is looking. And she's pretty good at it! She puts her heart into what she loves and it bears artistic fruit.
Of course, her determination and love hide the fact that she’s personally very hard on herself — when she comes in second place in the initial voting for the General Election, she doesn’t blame it on anyone but herself. One of Yuko’s great strengths is that she firmly believes in her friends, but she also is very hard on her own work ethic and training regime. She stays up late, practices harder, because she believes that she needs to be better than she currently is. She doesn’t begrudge any of her friends for doing well; she simply believes that she has to work harder to reach their level and surpass them. She admits that this is because she loves them — especially Acchan, a girl so radiant that almost no one manages to compare. Yuko claims she’s Acchan’s rival because she wants to dance beside her, her heroine. Yuko’s love manifests in this determined, spirited way because she wants to be able to enjoy herself and her time on the stage together with her friends.
Effects of memory loss:
Yuko has always been a very open person, so I don’t think much about her basic personality will change. She’ll still be very determined to succeed, though that will likely be passed onto her desire to win games and help teammates instead of her singing career, until she remembers more. She’ll also become fiercely loyal to her team, and although she may fight with them, she’ll always attempt to reconcile any problems they have. She’s very much a team leader in terms of spirit, so she’ll bring that to her team with gusto. Much of her character arc is based around her effortlessly outgoing personality, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she retained that same sense of self even without many memories at all.

The only thing I can see changing is her outlook on love and admiration. In AKB she challenges those people she loves to beat her in a sort of competitive fashion. Depending on her team, she might become more open about her honest feelings instead of relying on competitions to prove her dedication to them. I think it will be interesting to see how people affect the way in which she expresses her love and friendship, especially because she will not remember yet how the original oshima yuko would behave in those situations, so I’d expect at least a fair amount of “what I am doing” versus “what I think I should be doing” eventually.

Personal area/item: The AKB home stage from Akibastar! A smaller stage, looks kind of like this.
